Having any sound for any film is key. It helps emphasize the tone of the scene and creates emotional responses from the audience. Soundtrack is so important for films, that it even has its own category at the Oscars. Looking into sound, many horror films produced off- key piano notes and sharp notes from strings, creating tension and an overwhelming feeling of discomfort. Most jump scares need build ups, in order to increase the tension. During these build ups, that is where the soundtrack of the film can be most aural, due to the impact the sound has on the audience. Most of the sounds are produced in a more classical way, and frequently the use of strings are most common. A famous example of strings being used to quickly escalate tension, is the infamous jaws theme, of the strings slowly getting quicker and louder as the shark nears in.
