The run up to my final coursework has allowed me to produce media that has progressively been improving throughout the duration of my coursework. My final project is an example of the information I have obtained throughout researching and replicating horror conventions. The link between my horror opening scene and the work I have been doing throughout the year is evident at the very beginning. One of my first blogs detailed the codes and conventions of the openings of horror films, which can be likened to some of the codes and conventions in my own horror opening scene. Throughout my media course, I have been researching everything I could on horror films, in order for my responses to be as accurate as possible. My opening scene details a family who have subtly have their equilibrium disturbed by a shadowy presence. The opening introduces both the disruption of the equilibrium, and introduces the antagonist. The title, 'Umbra' is the Latin translation of shadow, which is the main focus of my opening. The title being shadow, not only demonstrates a way of highlighting the antagonist and protagonists through lighting, but sets the tone of horror film, as most horror related themes are often incorporated through darkness and shadows. Equally, the shadow can reference the first tracking shot, as the antagonist follows behind the protagonist in dark clothing, replicating the presence of a shadow.
