NEWSPAPERS IN DOCUMENTARIES

Upon reflecting on my first draft for my documentary, I was advised to include something more visually interesting in regards to my inclusion of newspapers as my target audience is younger and thus has a shorter attention span. I then researched some relevant newspapers on the archived newspaper website, however I still wanted to make the newspapers look as interesting as possible. I did some research on newspapers in documentaries and was advised to watch the Netflix mini-series 'Wormwood'. The Netflix show includes very creative shots of newspapers, which include collage and movement. Due to the fact that I am editing my documentary on Da Vinci Resolve, I had to innovate and learn new and complicated ways of making my newspapers more interesting. For one of my newspapers, I made a collage on an app on my phone called Bazaart, which allowed me to make the headline of my newspapers stick out more and have a deeper impact on my audience. For my other newspaper, I used a movement and animation effect to make it look like it was zooming in on a specific text from the newspaper. Learning these new techniques for my documentary and newspapers has developed my editing skills, but equally allowed me to further my researching skills as well.
