Exploring the work of John Grierson has given me creative inspiration to the fact that documentaries can be creative as well as educational. Grierson was best known for his work for the GPO Film Unit, with one of his most famous films being 'Night Mail', which is the film I looked at for this blog. His use of revolutionary and creative shots, such as the birds eye view shot and strapping the camera to the front of a train, provided revolutionary ideas for documentaries to come. Equally, the use of music that appears in the end of the documentary was key to the romanticism of the railway at the end of the film. Although in line with the fact that the GPO Film Unit was mainly used as a propaganda, the romanticism of the documentary is key to the popularity of the film, as well as John Grierson himself. Analyzing John Grierson has allowed me to understand how creativity plays a role in documentary film making, and has given me ideas in how to incorporate music to create meaning.
